Prime Healthcare reports outsized rates of unusual conditions
Encephalopathy
Hospitals in California reported the brain disease encephalopathy in 3.6 percent of elderly Medicare patients in 2010. Prime Healthcare reported a higher rate – 18 percent chainwide and 36 percent at one of its nonprofit hospitals, Encino Hospital Medical Center. A hospital could earn $7,000 per case for treating the condition as a complication of pneumonia.

Autonomic
Nerve Disorder
Autonomic nerve disorder is a rare condition that most California hospitals do not report seeing. Yet several Prime hospitals reported dozens of cases. Treating the disorder – a potentially deadly condition related to Parkinson's disease, diabetes and alcoholism – can earn $5,000 more for a hospital if coded the right way.

Malignant
Hypertension
The National Institutes of Health estimates that about 1 percent of hypertension cases are the very serious form, malignant hypertension. California hospitals not owned by Prime reported it in 2.6 percent of hypertension cases in 2010. Prime hospitals reported it at much higher rates – as high as 38 percent at one facility, Desert Valley Hospital. Hospitals can earn about $3,000 more per case when reporting the more serious condition.

Acute
Heart Failure
Hospitals not owned by Prime reported that 4.8 percent of their Medicare patients were diagnosed with acute heart failure from 2008-2010. But Prime hospitals reported more than double that rate. And at Prime's Chino Valley Medical Center, acute heart failure was reported at seven times the non-Prime rate. Treating the condition can bring a bonus payment from Medicare.

Septicemia
Septicemia is a life-threatening blood infection that gets worse very quickly. It can arise from infections throughout the body, including the lungs, abdomen and urinary tract. Prime hospitals reported septicemia among Medicare patients twice as often as other California hospitals in 2008. Medicare pays bonuses for treating patients with septicemia: Prime's chairman, Dr. Prem Reddy, testified in 2005 that his hospitals were reimbursed about $9,000 for each case.

Kwashiorkor
Kwashiorkor is a rare form of malnutrition caused by protein deficiency, often found in very poor countries during a drought or other natural disaster. State records show Prime hospitals reported kwashiorkor 20 times more often than other California hospitals from 2009 to 2010. Shasta Regional Medical Center billed Medicare for more than 1,000 cases. Medicare pays providers significant bonuses for treating kwashiorkor.
